5-in-a-bed Update from Galway Shopping Centre

(18 May 2011)

Five radio fans have taken up the challenge of living in ONE bed for seven days, all to win €5000 worth of prizes. Galway Shopping Centre is hosting this new breed of radio competition in conjunction with regional station i102104fm. The contestants taking part in “5 in a Bed” are living in a shop window until this coming Friday 20th May.

The five contestants have one bed between them for the week and their every move is monitored by staff at the radio station, while movements are streamed on a live webcam on Galway Shopping Centre’s website. The five finalists battled it out from hundreds of entries and underwent psychological assessment before they were admitted to the shop window last Friday 13th May. Without phones, watches and clocks, the contestants have no idea of what is happening in the outside world and were allowed to bring only one luxury item each into the camp. Among the contestants is Eoghan Lydon from Cheathru Rua, Connemara who brought a guitar into the shop window.

Twenty seven year old John Caheny from Sligo claimed he would be up for anything in the house. A former clown, he brought his beloved juggling balls into the bed and his luxury item was his tinted moisturiser! Other contestants include Heather McKenna who had to act as a dog for an hour, complete with lead and bowl of water, 25 year old Claire Burke from Castlebar who works in Tesco and Insurance worker Shane Raftery who has sparked up a budding romance with Heather.

The contestants have been set daily tasks including donning bright pink bras with two eggs inside; a challenge which saw them aim not to break the eggs during tough exercises. Others include singing and dancing for passing shoppers at Galway Shopping Centre, playing badminton in a bed for five hours straight and Twister with a Difference. Irish club land classics and annoying tunes have been pumped out through the stereo system on loop constantly, in a effort to see which contestant will pack up their bags first.

However, all five have remained firmly in the bed, with the aim of winning €5000 worth of prizes from Galway Shopping Centre. This Friday will see the grand finale of the competition when the winner of “5 in a Bed” will be crowned. Check out all the action live NOW !
